Well it's the middle of summer. British Columbia has been having a bit of a heat wave. Parts of the Creston Valley are constrained by water restrictions; since we are on a well, we don't have to worry about that.
The plants are thriving. I don't think the hostas have ever been this luscious.
We're really appreciating our east-facing view. For the obvious reasons, such as sunrises like these:
but also because, unlike the houses in the west-facing subdivision that was developed around the same time we were building our house, we don't have to cover our windows to block the sun's heat from early Spring until mid-Fall. (I'm not joking; if you look at the windows of those homes as you drive by on the highway that runs along the base of the subdivision, you'll see that every window is covered.) Most of our windows don't have coverings at all, just the ones in the main bedroom. There is no highway running past us, just a dead-end road, and with the house being elevated as it is, privacy isn't much of a concern.
I took this photo at about 5 pm on August 5th. The sun is shining, it's a beautiful day in paradise........and the house is shaded! The windows are open to catch the cool air.
We have the grove of trees that make up a portion of the property to thank for the shade. It's quite miraculous how the house is seemingly tucked into a cool nook; real estate agents would say "nestled", but then again, real estate agents seem to love to say "nestled".
Even the pond which is in the courtyard right outside the front door is in shade. The waterlilies have almost all closed up for the day, even though there are several hours of daylight to come.
I'm done for now too.
